Magnet Opus EMF Transducer
The Magnet Opus is a magnet wire transducer designed to amplify the untold "secret" sounds inhabiting our electromagnetic environments. These can be sounds emitted by electrical and motorized tools - for example, neon signs, power drills, and photocopiers; as well as seemingly innocuous digital devices such as laptops, smartphones, modems, and cordless telephones.
This is a passive device and consists of a single coil of magnet wire terminated to a 1/4” jack, measuring roughly 4” (10 cm) in length. A hefty dose of silicone and heat shrink protects the interior wire coil. An additional spring tendril is terminated to the top of the device; this allows for touch-interaction in certain electronic environments. While the Magnet Opus does not require batteries, it enjoys having plenty of boost in order to work. Adding a preamp brings the Magnet Opus to life, transforming it into an instant antenna - amplifying the electric fields that occupy our daily worlds.
The photos display both the original Magnet Opus and our new tendril-enabled edition.
In the video below, the original Magnet Opus picks up waves of weirdness generated by scrolling through the internet. The mouse activity and keyboard positioning was by no means subtle - apparently keyboards can pack a lot of distortion! The Magnet Opus did not have any additional effects, only the gain on our mixer.
The following video features the newer tendril-enabled Magnet Opus. Here the Magnet Opus interacts with a lamp (which packs a lot of EMF noise) AND the headphone output from our mixer, creating a no-input feed. To boost the signal, the Magnet Opus is running through our Bump Up preamp into a mixer.
More? How about a drill waltz!
And finally, this audio link features the Magnet Opus searching out sounds around the house, such as modems, Android phones, and bluetooth devices.
